A historic project is taking shape in northern Minnesota. The Mesabi Metallics Mine is the first ground-up taconite mine built in more than 50 years. The scale of the site, constant movement, and serious safety hazards demand focus and precision every day.

This feature highlights the challenges of mining work, from navigating heavy traffic and oversized equipment to installing complex electrical systems across an enormous footprint. From energizing the facility to automation, instrumentation, and miles of cable, the work requires highly skilled electricians with deep experience in heavy industrial construction.

At the center of it all is IBEW Local 294, a well-trained and dedicated local leading the electrical work on site. Beyond construction, this project creates long-term maintenance work and future job opportunities that will support skilled union labor for years to come.
